A Respectable Trade :: Slavery Essays

A Respectable Trade Many economic systems exist in the movie A Respectable Trade. Capitalism is present, as the Cole’s hire their cook and pay her for her time. Self – Employment also exists as one witnesses through the doctor. The economic system in which the plot revolves around is Slavery. Mr. Cole tries to earn a fortune in the business of slave trade. His wife, Francis, is ordered to teach them to assimilate into European culture by teaching them English, dressing them in new cloths and re-naming them. As the film progresses, so does Mr. Cole’s greed and arrogance increases. He begins to act superior and to dominate the household. Many slave owners including Mr. Cole began to engrain these feelings into their culture, to be carried through generations. In A Respectable Trade, the owner of the slaves is Josiah Cole. This is a new business investment for Josiah. He is not well known with the aristocrats in Bristol, England and does not have the poise and charm it takes to be accepted in to their circle. As a result, he invests in marrying Francis Scott. She was raised by â€Å"old money† and possesses the grace, status and wealth required to begin a successful business in slave trading. She is also a very educated woman and has the ability to teach the slaves English and how to behave as a European servant might have been expected to. Consequently, Josiah appears to have a prosperous business investment by marring Francis as she can lead him and their business of slave trade into Queen’s Square. â€Å"Generally the owner is responsible for providing minimal food, shelter, and clothing. Members of a family can be separated at the will of the owner†¦A slave is commonly regarded as an article of property, or chattel, and therefore can be sold or given away.† In A Respectable Trade the viewer sees the slaves eventually living in better conditions, eating healthier and with more comfortable clothing, nevertheless the clothing was very European and may have felt uncomfortable to them. Eventually, Francis feels compassion for the slaves, especially for Mehuru, and this is what drives her to make their lives more comfortable, if lives can be comfortable with out freedom. However, in the beginning of the business, they were treated poorly and often. It is important to remember that these better living conditions were not originally a result of Francis’s moral conscious Her motivations were more for economical reasons.

Historical Writings Of The Early Middle Ages Origins And...

In late antiquity (161-565 CE) to the early middle ages the origins and development of early biographies and hagiographies were beginning to occur and transform. In this essay, I will argue how and why people wrote biographical writings by referring to the works of Augustine’s Confessions, Einhard’s Life of Charlemagne and the hagiography, Perpetua. First of all, it is important to remember that biographical writings at first were regarded as a mere way of writing down history. Focusing on one individual’s life events, the genre didn’t begin to emerge until the 18th century, hence why historians should be careful when analysing such sources (Kendall) . Early biographies from these periods tend to focus on the lives of kings, saints and other notable people. They were derived to inspire people and perhaps lead a more religious, holy life. This is since most the people who were writing these works were monks, hermits and priests using their knowledge and un derstanding of these people to help raise awareness of their lives. Many were paid by noble kings to write their biographies to legitimise their right to rule and to put away any criticism. Secondly, a biography is a person’s life written from the perspective of another. It is typically written in third person, different from an autobiography which is written by that particular person on their own lives, written in the first person. One such biography was Einhards, Life of Charlemagne, or Vita

If you earned your baccalaureate degree prior to this past June, please indicate your plans for the upcoming academic year. I have been working as a research technician at the Center for Epigenetic Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center since last June and will continue to do so for the upcoming year. My research involves examining the epigenetic changes that occur in cancer progression. Using techniques such as Chromatin Immunoprecipitation and Assays for Transposase Accessible follow by high throughput sequencing (ChIP-seq and ATAC-seq), my focus will be on alterations in histone modifications and changes in chromatin accessibility. Collaborating with other investigators, I will use both mouse model and actual patient samples to study a variety of different cancers. I have been involved in a clinical trial for a small molecule inhibitor of histone methyltransferase DOT1L as a treatment for myeloid leukemia in both adult and pediatric patients. The experimental data I help generate aid physicians in determining if the drug is working as expected at a molecular level and whether it correlate s with clinical outcome. I am hoping to be involved in more clinical trials for the treatments of various leukemias. Since March, I have been volunteering at the Hospital for Special Surgery where I am a Surgical Liaison. I explain to patients and their families about the orthopedic surgeries that will be performed and answer any questions. I am gaining more hands-on

Overall, I had a good sense of where I spend my time and how to find time to fit NCU into my life to work on assignments and process through my courses. From this assignment, one thing I still need to improve is to avoid using the word â€Å"you† in my writing because it is slang. Week 3: Compare and Contrast Using APA Style For week three, I learned about the importance of academic integrity, APA formatting, and plagiarism. The assignment for week one and three prepared me for week four’s assignment to analyze research with the help of key words, peer-reviewed journals, and search limiters. After reading the NCU Academic Integrity Policy, I understand that I have an expectation to produce good academic work based on the foundation of integrity and responsible behavior. The assignment in week 3 also gave me the foundations of APA form and style and the importance of paraphrasing to avoid plagiarism. From this assignment, I have learned the importance of paraphrasing and quoting. NCU has chosen that one’s work should have less than 20% unoriginal wording and if one are writing a short paper, there should only be one valuable sentence to quote or none at all. Memories Last a Lifetime free essay sample

I believe in traveling and exploring, making memories, and living life. When I was a little girl, my family owned a beautiful, old home in the mountains of Vermont where countless weekends were spent. I was fortunate enough to have such a wonderful home away from home, where I could create traditions with my family. Although the house is no longer a part of my life, the moments spent there will stay with me forever and play a part in shaping who I am today. I remember the distinct, yet indescribable smell that hit me smack across the face and ran through my body with familiarity upon entering the house. I remember catching salamanders in the pond with old, rusty nets and feeling the amphibians’ slippery bodies before releasing them back into their natural habitat. I remember feeling weightless, like superwoman, flying through the air on the giant oak’s rope swing. We will write a custom essay sample on Memories Last a Lifetime or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I remember the damp, clean grass under by bare feet, running up and down the hills of the backyard. I remember the sweet, maple taste of the mini doughnuts, baked fresh from the shop in town. I remember fearing for my life when learning to ski for the first time, crossing winter sports Olympian off of my list of possible future careers. I remember the coldest water I’ve ever felt in the Mad River, but swimming anyways, no matter how much my body refused to adjust to the frigid temperature. I remember every last detail down to the weird face mug on the mantel above the fireplace and the dining room’s eerie chandelier. I remember being carefree. I remember happiness. Looking back on it today, I realize that I took those moments for granted. Now that I have gotten older I understand how lucky I was to have such wonderful experiences and a strong and loving family with me along the way. Of course I miss those days. I miss being a little kid, when by biggest concern was the fact that my nine o’clock bedtime would prevent me from being able to watch â€Å"Full House†. That is not to say I would go back for a second though. I now understand how important it is to live in the moment, because before we know it, we blink and life passes us by. We spend too much of our time wishing for the future, or longing for the past, instead of simply enjoying what is right in front of us. If we all took one minute out of our day to appreciate what we have in this very moment, the ride might be slightly more bearable. I am thankful for all that I have had and am ready to seize whatever opportunities may come my way. It is a strong upbringing and memori es such as the ones made in our Vermont home that have shaped me into the person I am today and I wouldn’t change any of it for the world.
