Execution free essay sample
From what they would see, Grace had already stopped breathing. Her eyes, dull and lifeless, stared blankly into the eyes of her son. Horror was all that he could feel; shocking him to the point of immobility. He could only shift his gaze from his mother to the murderer behind her. The sun was setting and the shadows from the trees stretched into the empty room and touched the wall opposite the window. It was barely bright enough to see the cloaked man in black holding a machete; the sharp edge bathed in deep crimson, which shone drearily when he tilted it towards the last rays of light. Mother, wake up The boys voice was weathered down by the perilous journey he endured. For months, he and his guards were in search of a healer to rid him of his illness. The task, however, was ongoing due to the fact that magic users were dwindling away. So not only was he mentally drained, but physically as well. Forgive me, Athem. The murderer said coldly as he came closer to the cowering boy. Athem recoiled; accidently kicking his mothers hand, which she outstretched towards him before she died. He moved back until he was in the corner of the room, beside the large red curtain that hung idly beside the window. Why, Johnus? He cried. The large man referred to as Johnus stopped and looked at the dead woman. The darkness that loomed over the room fooled both the child and the murderer because it seemed, for only an instant; they could hear a soft whisper escape from the lips of the queen. It pains me to do this. However we cannot exist. He raised his eyes after a moment to see the boy half hiding his face behind the curtain. Johnus stepped over the Graces body and made his way towards him again; holding the reddened blade at his side. I must protect this world, even if it is from my own kind. The boy sat still; frightened and crying . Slowly, Johnus raised his blade ___________________________________ What more do you want to know? Johnus asked Themara indifferently; sitting on the empty floor behind his cell. The sun, which had now risen through the barred windows behind him, gave the young womans tears a soft glistening effect. They were innocent! It wouldnt last. Johnus sighed. They were Mehbus, so it was only a matter of time before they lost control of both their minds and bodies. Themara lowered her head; trying as hard as she could to stop her tears. When she spoke, her voice was weary and cracking. Youre a Mehbu! Johnus, you havent lost control She paused to gather her thoughts. Or have you? Johnus answered with a shake of his head. You dont understand. Within every Mehbu is a power that only grows stronger over time. Eventually, they go insane I knew when both Athem and I would die. Youre psychic? She asked sadly. Johnus eyes softened. Slowly, he raised his hand and felt the metal bars before him. I wa nt you to see what happened. Youre the only one who had ever tried to understand Themara wiped the tears away from her eyes. After a moment of silence, she tucked her long black bangs behind her ear and nodded slowly. He outstretched his hand through the bars of his prison. Themara, still upset, placed her hand in his. Now close youre eyes. She followed his instructions. Suddenly, Themara could see the vivid image of the dead woman on the floor, and Johnus looming over the cowering Athem. ___________________________________ Wavering in the initial decision to kill, Johnus looked down at the young prince thoughtfully. Athem cried softly and hid his face behind the red curtain. Eventually, though, he looked up into Johnus eyes; heartbroken but showing signs of rational thought. I know why Athem began to say, but took a deep breath and his voice wavered. I know what youre doing now. Johnus lowered the blade slightly. Youre a mind reader? The boy nodded. Then you understand? Athems brig ht blue eyes shifted to his mother. There was a certain eeriness about his stare that made Johnus feel uneasy. Mother had been acting strangely. I didnt understand until I saw the answer in you. Were the last of our kind, arent we? As Athem spoke, his voice calmed. The calmer he became, the more he differentiated from a normal child. He still had his soft, childish voice. The way and manner in which he spoke, however, revealed his level of understanding. I dont want to hurt people. Another tear rolled down his cheek, but he quickly wiped it away. So please, just do what you think is right. Johnus took a hesitant sigh, and then raised the machete over his head. Ill join you in the netherworld soon. His voice, unlike before, was soft and somewhat apologetic. With that, he hacked the blade downwards; killing Athem quickly with a blow to the head. __________________________________ Sitting in Athems room near the window, Themara watched as a man in a black hood led the shackled Johnus up the steps of the gallows. A small crowd huddled together in front of the courtyard to watch the execution. Being a royal bodyguard, she would usually attend to keep the peace. However, this whole situation left a bad taste in her mouth. She wasnt sure if it was justified, as she once was before. When Themara saw the noose being placed around his neck, she turned away from the window and eyed the floor sadly. Was it the right thing to do? She questioned herself brokenly as she heard the executioner ask for last words. She couldnt make out what he had said, but it was only seconds later before she heard the trap floor beneath him drop. Her heart sunk because she knew that his neck broke instantly. No one understood his way of thinking, and no one will because the last of the Mehbus were gone.

William Faulkner Literature Giant Essays - William Faulkner
William Faulkner: Literature Giant William Faulkner: Literature Giant ?The man himself never stood taller than five feet, six inches tall, but in the realm of American literature, William Faulkner was a giant? (?Faulkner,? American 101). The background and early years of Faulkner's life sets the stage for his outstanding success in literature. He is unique in his works due to the various types and styles of literature including: ?A Rose for Emily.? These various forms of work landed Faulkner outstanding awards and honors. As an American giant, Faulkner's novels have been recognized as among the greatest novels ever written by an American (?Faulkner,? American 101). William Faulkner was born on September 25, 1897 to Murry Cuthbert and Maud Butler Faulkner. He was born into a genteel Southern family in New Albany, Mississippi. ?An indifferent student, he dropped out of high school in 1915 to work as a clerk in his grandfather's bank, began writing poetry, and submitted drawings to the University of Mississippi's yearbook? (?William,? Discovering 1). When World War I began, Faulkner enlisted in the Royal Air Force in Canada; he never saw action. Following the war he returned to Mississippi and briefly attended the University of Mississippi. Later, in 1925, he moved to New Orleans where he met Sherwood Anderson, who encouraged his development and helped secure his first novel (?William,? Masterplots 1). Over the next few years, Faulkner wrote reviews, poems, and prose pieces for ?The Mississippian? and worked several odd jobs. At the recommendation of Stark Young, a novelist in Oxford, in 1921 Faulkner took a job in New York City as an assistant in a bookstore managed by Elizabeth Prall, who later became the wife of Sherwood Anderson. Faulkner's most notorious job during this time was the position as a postmaster in the university post office from the spring of 1922 to October 31, 1924. By all accounts, he was a terrible postmaster, spending much of his time misplacing or losing mail, and failing to serve customers. When a postal inspector came to investigate, Faulkner agreed to resign. During this time, he also served as a scoutmaster for the Oxford Boy Scout troop, but he was asked to resign for ?moral reasons? (probably drinking) (Thompson 4-5). William Faulkner is considered by many readers to have been America's greatest modern writer (?William,? Masterplots 1). He was always the artist, always concerned to provide a work of the imagination (?Faulkner,? American 103). ?His fiction satisfies the critical demands that writing be inventive and invigorating, as ready to release the imagination as it is to channel it? (?William,? Masterplots 2). Faulkner had humor, often ironic and bitter, in the series of dramas and tragedies he wrote about the Old South (Thompson 5). The sheer bulk of his life-work was impressive. Faulkner's publications include approximately fifty poems, ninety short stories, seventeen novels, and a three-act drama which was produced on Broadway (Thompson 5). In, 1930, starting with ?A Rose for Emily,? William Faulkner began publishing short stories in national magazines. In the short story ?A Rose for Emily,? Faulkner writes about an old woman named Emily Grierson who owes the government taxes. One day, Emi ly receives a formal letter asking her to call the sheriff's office, but Emily does not reply to the letter. Then, the mayor and the aldermen go to Emily's house asking her to pay her taxes. Emily repeatedly says, ?See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson.? The gentlemen finally leave. Two years later, the major receives a call from Emily's neighbors complaining about an odor that is coming from her house. So the next night, four men cross Emily's lawn and sprinkle lime in her house. After a week or two the smell disappears. Years after Emily's father's death, she meets a construction worker named Homer Barron. Emily wants to marry Homer, but marriage is not what Homer wants. One Sunday afternoon Emily goes to the pharmacy and asks for some poison. ?I want arsenic,? she said. The pharmacist assumes that the poison was for rats. A few days later, Homer leaves town, and Emily sends her negro out to find him. Three days later Homer is back and the front door to Emily's house remains closed all

My Path to Success Essays
My Path to Success Essays My Path to Success Essay My Path to Success Essay My Path to Success Growing up, I had spent a lot of my time building and creating different structures with Lego sets and seeing what crazy extravagant model I could create next. My Father was always proud of me and thought of me being an engineer after seeing each Lego model that I had created. The influence of my father led me to believe that engineering would be as easy as a Lego set and therefore, I started out with my major as engineering. Though, now that I know what I want to do, engineering is out of the question. I researched and sought out what I want to do with the rest of my life. I ant to be a geologist. There is not very much that stands in my way on my path to success. I mean of course there is still a lot of college hours I need to acquire, but with time and effort I believe I will get those hours slowly and surely. Money is always another issue cause, no surprise, college is expensive, but I have financial aid and that gives me plenty of extra money I need for text books, living expenses, food, and other necessities needed to help me get through this time in my life. My life at my apartment with my three other roommates is quite the experience. Sometimes my roommate and his irlfriend get into rough arguments and verbally fght but usually it doesnt last long, and if I am studying I can usually Just tone them out. One of my roommates is actually pretty good at math so he helps me out sometimes when he gets the chance to. So, what I need to do to achieve my goal is to continue living life and living up to my responsibilities. There is not a lot I cant handle and I believe that I will reach my goal to become a geologist with time and effort. We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. Nelson Mandela

Aaa Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Aaa - Essay Example now evident in our planet with the fiercer storm, frequent floods, warmer weather and other weather related calamities, that cost us lives and properties destroyed, his argument that global warming is already upon us is now accepted as a given fact. Krislov just reiterated the fact that ââ¬Å"decades of climate research show that global warming is happening and human activity is a driving causeâ⬠. Goreââ¬â¢s arguments are already common to the modern audience because his arguments are also used by other environmentalist groups and advocates to increase the awareness of the public about climate change. In fact, many academe today include Goreââ¬â¢s documentary An Inconvenient Truth as part of their curriculum to educate students about climate change. So it is no longer an argument for me. Goreââ¬â¢s discussion about the possibility of melting glaciers in Antarctica has already been documented in camera by National Geographic that would cause the atmosphere to warm and thus, presented compelling evidence that it happened and is still happening right before our very eyes. This similar demonstration of melting glacial sheets was also shown in the documentary An Inconvenient Truth except that we thought about it as an exaggeration. The carbon emission that started it all is also given and everybody knows about that already. In fact right now, governments are already conte mplating to make it an official policy with many people thinking that it is already long

Relate the quotation selected to the theories of tourism and impacts Research Paper
Relate the quotation selected to the theories of tourism and impacts and sustainability - Research Paper Example While this along with other such regions around the world are quickly becoming the must-watch hot spots of wetland destinations, it is essential to see how far the tourism industry is thriving on both improving the economy and protecting the marshes by sustainable maintenance. Since wetlands provide essential services such as water, food and energy, the indigenous people will have an urge to protect the swamp, mostly as part of their own tradition and culture (Chang 2010, p. 190). At the same time, tourism industry is interconnected with social, economical and environmental factors of the community. On the whole, tourism has the capacity to generate jobs and related businesses. Thus development in tourism needs to be sustainable, so that a) the viability of enterprises and activities can be maintained for a long term on the economic front, b) a greater respect for human rights, that is recognised with an impartial allotment of benefits to eradicate poverty, could be gained on the soc ial front and c) conserving and managing of resources, biological diversity and natural heritage become priority on the environmental front. As a matter of fact, sustainable tourism would promote a desire in the masses to enjoy green tourism, for example, conducting a series of elite interviews on why tourism is booming in Cuba, Jayawardene (2002. p 57) found that ââ¬Å"the governmentââ¬â¢s focus on and attention to sustainable tourism developmentâ⬠was the main reason for the tourism flourishing in Cuba. It shows that tourist preferences are increasingly influenced by sustainability concerns; that is why, according to Taleb Rifai (Secretary General World Tourism Organisation), ââ¬Å"today, ecotourism, nature, cultural adventure, rural and community tourism are taking the lead in the tourism markets and are predicted to continue growing more rapidly than traditional tourism products. Wetlands tourism is therefore uniquely placed in the evolving scenario of green tourismâ⠬ (2012). Considering the growing popularity of greener destinations, there is an urgent need of sustainability in wetland tourism management. The planning of policies and awareness rising on this issue needs to be focused on the potential value of the wetland tourism with regards to the economic benefit it can bring into the indigenous society. The study of the Fattââ¬â¢an wetlands in Taiwan concludes by stating that awareness of the local people is the key to the success of any sustainable management program (Chang 2010 pp 198). However, many wetland examples around the world would reveal the risks and consequences of having unsustainable management in wetland tourism. Many countries have introduced wetland tourism policies, but they have not set sustainable strategies adequately recognising the role of wetlands. Hence, some of the African countries including Kenya, Namibia and so on were not able to yield the fruit of wetland tourism (Earth Watch). Similarly, the negative e ventualities resulting from unsustainable management of wetland might include the deterioration of the ecosystem due to various activities, which may also negatively affect the tranquillity of the wetland species

Activity Essay Example for Free
Activity Essay Another strength of mine is knowing my audience. When reading to say an older crowd they probably wouldnââ¬â¢t like a lot of loud sound effects like a fire truck or a police car. When reading to a younger crowd say for example ââ¬Å"the car came to a screeching holtâ⬠making a sound of a car coming to a sudden stop would not be bad at all and It will keep your young listeners entertained. Critical thinking can be a hard concept to grasp because your just not letting your pen or pencil flow freely you have to think and analyze your answer. One of my strengths in critical thinking is to be able to take notes while reading so when it comes to the questions at the end I can tell myself that the answer is in my notes somewhere so I know I should find it. A weakness of mine is that I get lazy and I wont turn back to my notes to actually find the answer I might just fill in whatever I feel is correct. Another one of my weaknesses is sometimes I may not read the question all the way through and because of that I wont get the exact answer that I need and I wind up not caring anymore. The writing process in my opinion is the most important part of writing without it your paper would probably make no sense and have a lot of mistakes. Strength of mine in the writing process is that I like to plan my writing carefully before just jumping into a paper. A weakness in this area is that I hate the revising and editing portion and I know its something that I need to work on if I want to have a great paper. Another strength is when I write the paper I try to get it exactly how I want it the 1st time so the second time through I just have to add a couple words or periods here or there. Spelling and grammar everyoneââ¬â¢s favorite part of a paper without it nobody would ever understand what you were trying to say. If you leave your paper with a lot of sentence fragments and run-ons nobody will bother to pick up anything you have written. Strength of mine in this area is I typically read over a sentence aloud twice to make sure it makes sense and itââ¬â¢s not a run-on. A weakness of mine is that I am not a very good speller without word and spell check all my teachers would probably look at me like I was crazy and its something that I have got to work on. Another weakness is sometimes I may forget a comma or a period or put a period where a question mark should go and if you give that paper to a newspaper or magazine they will hand it right back to you. Writing has a lot of components and some of the most important ones are rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading and writing; writing processes; and knowledge of conventions. Even though every one has there own strengths and weaknesses you can always get your strengths stronger and your weaknesses stronger also.

A Respectable Trade :: Slavery Essays
A Respectable Trade Many economic systems exist in the movie A Respectable Trade. Capitalism is present, as the Coleââ¬â¢s hire their cook and pay her for her time. Self ââ¬â Employment also exists as one witnesses through the doctor. The economic system in which the plot revolves around is Slavery. Mr. Cole tries to earn a fortune in the business of slave trade. His wife, Francis, is ordered to teach them to assimilate into European culture by teaching them English, dressing them in new cloths and re-naming them. As the film progresses, so does Mr. Coleââ¬â¢s greed and arrogance increases. He begins to act superior and to dominate the household. Many slave owners including Mr. Cole began to engrain these feelings into their culture, to be carried through generations. In A Respectable Trade, the owner of the slaves is Josiah Cole. This is a new business investment for Josiah. He is not well known with the aristocrats in Bristol, England and does not have the poise and charm it takes to be accepted in to their circle. As a result, he invests in marrying Francis Scott. She was raised by ââ¬Å"old moneyâ⬠and possesses the grace, status and wealth required to begin a successful business in slave trading. She is also a very educated woman and has the ability to teach the slaves English and how to behave as a European servant might have been expected to. Consequently, Josiah appears to have a prosperous business investment by marring Francis as she can lead him and their business of slave trade into Queenââ¬â¢s Square. ââ¬Å"Generally the owner is responsible for providing minimal food, shelter, and clothing. Members of a family can be separated at the will of the ownerâ⬠¦A slave is commonly regarded as an article of property, or chattel, and therefore can be sold or given away.â⬠In A Respectable Trade the viewer sees the slaves eventually living in better conditions, eating healthier and with more comfortable clothing, nevertheless the clothing was very European and may have felt uncomfortable to them. Eventually, Francis feels compassion for the slaves, especially for Mehuru, and this is what drives her to make their lives more comfortable, if lives can be comfortable with out freedom. However, in the beginning of the business, they were treated poorly and often. It is important to remember that these better living conditions were not originally a result of Francisââ¬â¢s moral conscious Her motivations were more for economical reasons.
